June 22nd, 2026: Psychology, Actually podcast with Dr Marianne Trent
Martyn recently joined Dr Marianne Trent on the Psychology, Actually podcast to discuss extinction learning and behaviour change.
The conversation explored why fears, habits, cravings, and other learned behaviours can be difficult to “unlearn”, as well as one of the most common misconceptions in psychology: that extinction learning erases previous learning. The discussion highlighted how original learning often remains intact, helping to explain why unwanted behaviours and emotional responses can sometimes return even after successful treatment.

June 15th, 2026: Excellence in Learning and Teaching Award
Martyn was nominated for one of this year’s Excellence in Learning and Teaching Awards at Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe
Nominations come directly from students and reflect contributions to teaching, supervision, and the wider student experience.

June 9th, 2026: PGR Conference - Keynote speaker
Martyn gave the keynote speech at the Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe PGR Conference this week.
As part of the talk, Martyn was asked to reflect on his own journey into academia before sharing some of the GamPIT research findings.
It was great to see GamPIT research brought to life through a live illustration during the conference by the brilliant Laura Sorvala.
June 7th, 2026: Swansea Half-Marathon
Martyn ran the Swansea half-marathon alongside friends, colleagues and students. Managing to complete it in just under 2hrs (1:59:26).
Apr 29th, 2026: Invited Talk - University of Cambridge
Martyn give a talk at the University of Cambridge MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit.

March 31st, 2026: External Examiner - University College London
Martyn served as an external examiner for a PhD viva at UCL (University College London) this week for Ella Tuominen. He was invited by Professor Oliver Robinson and co-examined Ella with Dr Ciarán O'Driscoll.
W/C Feb 23rd 2026: Employability Week
Martyn organied Swansea University's School of Psychology's Employability Week. School-specific sessions included:
• A "day in the life" session from Clinical Psychologist Dr Rachael Hunter on the realities of the profession.
• An alumni panel featuring Jacob Wedmore, Maya Blackmore and Niamh Crabb, sharing reflections on the transition from student to graduate roles.
•A networking session with Mike Clyne titled '“I Don’t Need a Network” said no successful person ever!"'
• A careers fair with a wide range of organisations speaking directly with our students about opportunities.
These events were popular and generated some very positive feedback - Martyn reflected on what worked well about these sessions HERE.
Feb 18th, 2026: Invited Talk - University of Oxford
Martyn spoke at the University of Oxford about the GamPIT research project. He shared some emerging findings on the role of Pavlovian and instrumental conditioning in shaping behaviour within gambling contexts, alongside other learning phenomena. The engagement and questions from the attendees were brilliant. A particular thank you to Prof. Robin Murphy for the generous invitation and warm hospitality. Thank you also to the funders International Center For Responsible Gaming and Bristol Hub for Gambling Harms Research hub for supporting the work and making this possible.
